This used to be all sugar cane and a big sugar factory, but the industry is now in decline. The factory has been dismantled and only the metal shape can be seen. Some of the stone has been used in hotels such as Movenpick.

The coast has a slightly wilder feel here but there are good sandy beaches and the islands newest hotels. The small stone Memorial of the Trevessa stands on the edge of the beach near St Martin’s Cemetary at Bel Ombre. The Trevessa was a ship bound for Australia that foundered off the coast, 1600 kilometres away, but 17 people survived a 25 day ordeal at sea and were washed up on this spot in 1923.

There are two golf courses and a chateau that has been converted into a restaurant. It is possible to hike, ride and tour the mountains behind which are a national park.
