Explore the wonders of Namibia on this amazing 12-day tour through the highlights of the region, from Windhoek and the NamibRand Nature Reserve to Sesriem and the Kalahari Desert. Along the way, you'll have the chance to take guided walks, enjoy sundowners while you take in the scenery, and make the most of some spectacular photo opportunities. (ATI)

Day 1

Overnight: Galton House, Windhoek

Day 2

Travelling to the Bagatelle Lodge today, you will find yourself located on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, surrounded by red dunes and beautiful scenery. Although the Kalahari is not officially categorised as a desert, rather a savannah environment, it’s still referred to as a desert. It’s home to numerous interesting wildlife species, such as meerkats, porcupine, bat-eared foxes, ostriches and zebra. The nature drives offered allow you to learn about the ecology of the unique area and to enjoy a beautiful sunset before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Overnight: Bagatelle, Strohbale chalet, Kalahari

Day 3 & 4

On day 3, you will journey to the Fish River Lodge, set in a grove of ancient Quiver trees. Found in this unique eco system are rare mountain zebra, elusive oryx and water-loving species. The geology of the canyon is as fascinating as the archaeology here, so there’s plenty to discover and learn. The ancient pictoglyph sites are found in abundance, as are stone age tools – a reminder of those who wandered the landscape thousands of years ago. With 45,000 hectares situated in Canyon Nature Park, there’s plenty of space to explore and relax.

A visit to the canyon can be as adventurous or tranquil as you’d like. If you want something more energetic, you can go for a long walk along the rim of the canyon and take up sundowner trails with a glass of champagne. You can hike down into the heart of the canyon with a qualified guide too. If you want to relax, the decks at the lodge offer beautiful views from morning to night - be sure to spend time star gazing, as the night sky is particularly bright and beautiful in this part of Africa.

Overnight: Fish River Lodge, Fish River Canyon

Day 5 & 6

Today you will travel towards Luderitz and Aus. You’ll be staying at the Desert Horse Inn, offering a luxury space with spacious rooms and a relaxed wooden deck overlooking the farm. There are self-guided walks that can be taken on the farm as well as optional nature drives to view the Namib wild horses, or you may decide to just relax in the peaceful surroundings.  The information centre at Aus is also worth a visit, here you can learn about the history of this area.

Overnight: Klein Aus Vista – Desert Horse Inn, Aus

Day 7 & 8

Tok Tokkie Trails is surrounded by beautiful desert scenery – whilst walking you will discover many secrets of the Namib that can’t be experienced whilst driving. Let your guide introduce you to this world, relax with a sundowner and enjoy a three- course dinner before falling asleep under the stars. The NamibRand Nature Reserve is a private conservation and protected area where wildlife can roam free.

On day 7 you will arrive at the Tok Tokkie Trails base where you’ll be greeted with refreshments. Your luggage will be transferred to the overnight camp by vehicle and your guide will give you a short introduction before a short scenic drive takes you to the starting point of the trail.  From there you will walk over a slope strewn with mysterious “fairy circles” and over rolling sand dunes to the first overnight camp. The dunes are not the massive ones that are encountered at Sossusvlei, but small, vegetated dunes that have a unique beauty of their own.

On day 8, early morning tea or coffee is served before sunrise followed by a light breakfast so that you can set off in the cool of the early morning. During the course of the day your guide will explain some wonders of the Namib to you - how the fascinating desert flora survives, how insect and reptile life adapts to the harsh environment and how mammals can survive here without water. The larger animals you might come across include bat-eared fox, oryx, springbok and ostrich.

Overnight: Tok Tokkie Trails, NamibRand Nature Reserve

Day 9 & 10

From Tok Tokkie trails you head further north again and on to the World renowned Sossusvlei and Sesriem, to the Hoodia Desert Lodge. The lodge is built overlooking the ephemeral Tsauchab River, where kudu and oryx can often be seen browsing. You will enjoy guided or self-guided walks along the course of the Tsauchab River which can be enjoyed in the afternoon, or alternatively join the lodge for a sundowner drink from a vantage point overlooking the Namib Desert. Also offered is a Namib Naukluft Mountain Excursion – experience this hidden jewel on a professional guided tour, as an addition to the Sossusvlei area. A mountain lunch in the beautiful natural habitat with water springs is going to be a highlight after hiking in the mountains.

Overnight: Hoodia Desert Lodge, Sesriem

Day 11

Journey back to Windhoek today. You’ll have the option of a number of activities, which include an optional sundowner nature drive, horse riding, collecting gemstones, going in search of bushman art, or viewing and photographing game such as kudu, Oryx, and the rare mountain zebra.  For the more energetic, climbing the Gamsberg mountain is also a rewarding option.
