Those who’ve visited this small but very special country, will agree that Bali is an island of contrasts. There are surf beaches with waves as huge as a house, tranquil beaches for honeymooners to swoon on, massive volcanic mountains and pretty green farmland. There are also two festivals taking place in October to suit the very opposite of tourists:
Â
Ubud Writers & Readers Festival – 6-8 Oct 2010
Writers from around the world gather in Bali for the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival. This premier literary event includes seminars, talks, dinners, workshops and a carnival of poetry and performance. 2010′s theme is ‘harmony in diversity’. The festival aims to ensure that intellectual and literary currents that exist in modern-day Indonesia have a forum to be voiced and heard. At the same time, the festival brings Asian writers and thinkers into direct contact with their Western counterparts, so that new artistic directions can be explored.
Asian Beach Games – Throughout October 2010
Beach-bums worldwide should grab the sun lotion and head to one of Bali’s beaches for the Asian Beach Games. Forty-five participating nations, 8,000 competitors and 13 different beach sports, including surfing, sailing, dragon boating, beach soccer and triathlon marathon swimming make up this summer sports event. Only Asian countries take part in this Olympic-style tournament held every two years. Its aim is to increase awareness of Indonesian sports and through beach sports the competition looks to attaining international prestige and recognition, making Bali the focal point of sporting tourism in Asia.
