You Cannot Beat a Good Local Paper

I have always been a fan of the good local newspaper. They have this uncanny ability to come up with unique headlines.

One of my favourites was in the Sussex Express and County Herald -  a venerable  local paper in Lewes. “Former Lewes man weds Ex Baseball star’s daughter” The headline that just kind of missed the story from every angle.

Take the local paper abroad to the Middle and Far East and there are some even better headlines. I believe now with the Phuket Gazette I have found the best ever ….

In a heading ‘Queer News’ comes the headline:

Man returns as Cock.

I can do no more than read you the story word for word. I have been laughing myself into tears with this for the last hour.

“Villagers have been marvelling at a fighting cock they believe is the reincarnation of a young man killed last year.

The cock, born just after the man’s death, has become attached to the man’s girlfriend, following her around everywhere.

When Khao Sod reporters went to investigate the story on March 8^th, they found the bird sitting in a hammock with 17 year old Phatsanan Khantasaree at the noodle shop where she works.

The owner of the shop said the fighting cock belongs to her nephew but behaves really oddly.

It has followed Miss Khantasaree  everywhere she goes for the past 5 months…

There is a sad but happy ending.

Sadly following the release of the story in the Thai press, Miss Khantasaree’s father forbade his daughter from consorting with the cock as he thought it looked odd. However after Phatsanan reasoned with him. She was given permission to see the cock again.

Its in the paper so it must be true.
