Beaches come in all different shapes, sizes, textures and unfortunately for us Brits – weathers!  The colour of the sand can also range from bog standard golden to a kaleidoscope of crazy colours!  Here are my top five beaches of the world – with one thrown in for those who can’t decide which colour sounds the nicest!

Punalu’u Beach, Hawaii
The most visited of the few black sand beaches on Hawaii’s Big Island, this stunningly black sand is actually volcanic rock, deposited as lava and subsequently cooled when met by the ocean. Apparently to take any of the sand home would result in you being cursed by a volcano goddess by the name of Pele!

Papakolea Beach, Hawaii
One of only two green sand beaches in the world, the unique colour of its sand can be attributed to volcanic activity – specifically, the green hue belongs to the abundance of olivine crystals which have been produced as a result of a nearby cinder cone erupting and eroding

Hyams Beach, New South Wales, Australia
There may be plenty of white beaches in the world, but this one has officially been voted the whitest in the world by the Guinness Book of Records!  You’ll definitely need to get your sunglasses out for this one!

Kaihalulu, Hawaii
Another crazy coloured beach from Hawaii, this one is better known as Red Sand Beach. The sand gets its red-black colour from the crumbling cinder cone hill that surrounds the bay. There are plenty of nude sunbathers on this beach, owing to its remote location – and the fact that no-one would notice your red bits!

Barbuda, Caribbean
Antigua’s diminutive sister is home to a smooth coastline edged with striking pink ‘sand’ beaches created from tiny pink shells and protected by barrier reefs.  These nearly deserted beaches offer those who venture over from Antigua the opportunity to enjoy excellent diving, snorkeling, fishing and bird watching.

And then of course there’s Rainbow Beach on Fraser Island, Australia. Seemingly unable to make up its mind, Rainbow Beach displays more than 70 different colours depending on the weather and the wind!
