The countdown to Galle Literary Festival 2009 is on. This annual event, which was rated as the top literary festival in the world by Harpers Bazaar magazine, is now in its third year, and is set to attract writers from Sri Lanka and across the globe.

The festival will take place from January 28 to February 1 2009 in the ancient walled city of Galle on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Confirmed attendees include Germaine Greer, Moses Isegawa, Michelle de Kretser, Romesh Gunesekera, Pico Iyer and many more.

As well as literature there will be events celebrating photography, ecology, architecture, music and food and the festival is expected to attract thousands of visitors.

The historic city of Galle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is 119 kilometres of the island’s commercial capital Colombo. As well as the city’s famous fort and other attractions it is an ideal base to discover the beaches, temples, wildlife, lowland tea plantations and rainforests of Sri Lanka’s Southern Province.
