Tropical Sky’s Lucy Gorham loves roller coasters. So we reckoned she’d also enjoy a Dune Safari by 4WD in Dubai. Seems like we were right…..
We were picked up from the hotel in a four wheel drive and taken to the dunes. My friend had already warned me not to sit in the back, as that gave you the bumpiest ride, so I sat in the middle. I was also recommended to wear shorts or trousers as you do get thrown about a bit. The driver was very friendly and seemed to really know and enjoy what he was doing. Although all the drivers looked like the bad guys from a Bond movie, they were all great and handled the big 4×4 jeeps with a lot of skill. We were convinced though that half the rest stops were for the benefit of our own chain-smoking driver.

When we got to the spot, we all got out and had a walk around while they deflated the tyres for the sand. I was surprised that the sand wasn’t scorching hot but the dunes themselves were enormous – almost like mountains of sand.  We were in a group with two other jeeps that drove up to the top of a very steep dune.  We took it in turns to descend, so we sat at the top and waited for the others. It felt like we were just hanging there, looking down a very steep slope. Then it was whoosh and we went down very fast, and I do mean very fast! It was very exciting and incredibly scary at the same time.
We spent about 30 minutes driving around the dunes then we stopped at Camel Rock, which is, unsurprisingly, a rock shaped like a camel, for an ice cold drink. One of the highlights for me though was stopping at a camel farm on the way back where there was the cutest baby camel that seemed to pose for photos.

This is a great trip and well worth doing. You can do a dune safari from any Tropical Sky holiday in Dubai or the other Emirates.
