Those who have visited Sri Lanka will instantly claim that the teardrop shaped island is the most beautiful jewel in the Indian Ocean - with golden sandy beaches, picturesque coastlines and friendly locals, it’s definitely the perfect place to escape the daily routine and dreary UK weather to relax and unwind in paradise.  The elephant is the main star of Sri Lankan wildlife, adored by all locals and an unforgettable experience (that is definitely worth pulling yourself away from the tropical beaches for) is a visit to the elephant orphanage in Pinnawela, where visitors are given the opportunity to get up close to herds of this gentle mammal.

Elephant habitats in Sri Lanka are slowly being destroyed so the orphanage has been set up in a way that stimulates conditions from the wild, with the animals free to roam around during the day.  With a herd of over 40, the orphanage has the greatest number of elephants held in captivity in the world and visitors are given the opportunity to walk freely alongside them and to approach them – often to be greeted by an inquiring trunk!  Restaurants within the orphanage overlook the 400 metre river, which provides hours of entertainment watching the elephants fascinating behavior and amazing photo opportunities as the elder elephants bathe and the younger ones play and squirt each other with their trunks!
