We were back from our morning walk, had eaten a great lunch and I went for a snooze at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge. I go off for my afternoon tea and cannot find a soul…

They’re all with the resident naturalist, Winston Marshall.  Winston says “Have you seen the snake?”  20 feet from my room in a plant pot is a catsnake. “It is only mildly venomous. It will make you very ill but it won’t kill you – unless you’ve got a weak heart!” Winston reassuringly adds!

I cannot say I am in love with snakes, but I had three very good snake encounters on my trip to the Sukau Lodge in Borneo with Tropical Sky. Firstly our excellent guide Aslan caught a tiny bronzeback swimming down the river past our boat. It nipped him but it was only a baby.
Then we caught the BBC film crew we saw earlier  with Steve Bagshaw climbing a tree chasing a snake. He is making a series called Deadly 90 about deadly species that he catches and holds – another Steve Irwin in the making!   We read recently that Steve had a bad accident. We hope he is recovering well and we are looking forward to Deadly 90.

Then one of the staff shouts there is an Orang Utan at the end of the boardwalk. I hurry on to the end and can see some branches moving. Then slowly the movement comes nearer. Then a mass of fur comes swinging into sight. It is just a glimpse, then he is gone. It’s a juvenile male, but he swings around again and we get another view of him gracefully moving from tree to tree.  All this within 400 yards of the Sukau Rainforest Lodge – stunning!
