I’ve just received my new copy of Fodor’s Complete African Safari Planner and haven’t stopped telling everyone about it since.
I’m a big fan of well-written guide books, and have been long on the look out for a comprehensive guide to Africa’s safari destinations. Fodor’s is now always on my desk and it looks like I’ll have to write my name in it so it doesn’t get pinched by the rest of the team.
If you’re planning an African safari it’s the perfect complement to the expert advice that Africa Sky’s expert reservations staff can give you, and will certainly help you make sense of the sometimes bewildering array of safari destinations on offer. It got great guides to the wildlife you are likely to encounter and loads more local information and tips for a successful safari holiday.
There are a couple of drawbacks though. Firstly, prices are all in dollars as it’s primarily aimed at the US market. Secondly, its section on Zambia concentrates on Victoria Falls and the south and it would have been great to have some more about the fantastic game reserves of the country’s interior. The only really good guide to Zambia remains the Bradt guide. Also, Fodor’s completely ignores Mozambique as a safari destination, which is a real shame, as it offers some fantastic game viewing opportunities.
Having said that, Fodor’s is the one if you’re looking for one book to help you with safari planning and I thoroughly recommend it.
