Glacier Trekking in Alaska

Juneau, Alaska’s capital, is located on a thin strip of land at the mouth of Gold Creek likes and offers an amazing back drop of Mt Juneau and Mt Roberts. Here you can see some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing in the world with whales, brown and black bear, porpoise, sea lions, harbour seals, sea otters, mountain goats, eagles and Sitka Black Tail Deer.

However, if you only do one activity when in Juneau, then it has to be a helicopter tour to the magnificent Mendenhall Glacier. There’s nothing quite like flying up into the clouds and around the various magical glacier formations.

I took a tour that landed on the glacier itself and what looks flat from the air can prove to be quite a hilly challenge as you find yourself walking over slopes of icy-blue jagged surfaces, trying to avoid deep crevices which are deceptively shallow-looking when filled with brilliant blue-green water. The whole experience is quite literally out of this world and glacier trekking is the closest sensation I can ever expect to get to walking on the moon!
