Barbados beach barbeque

On a return visit to Almond Beach Village in Barbados we took a half-day trip with ‘Captain Rumpy Pumpy’, one of the local characters who works from the beach.

I can only describe Captain Rumpy Pumpy as the Barbados equivalent of Del Boy. We agreed a price and went with him on his own boat with another family. The trip included swimming and feeding the turtles and snorkelling with the array of colourful tropical fish found around the shores.

Rumpy also gave us a history lesson on Speightstown, the nearest town to Almond Beach Village, and were he was born and still lives.

After all this activity we arrived on a small beach which was kept clean and tidy by Rumpy’s old friend Leroy who welcomed us lot. We dined on a sumptuous barbecue of fresh lobster, fish and meat cooked by Rumpy and his wife, all washed down with the local beer.

The children played happily with Rumpy’s children in the sea and on the inflatables in the next bay (Mullins). After lunch Leroy took the men off to the outside of his house for a game of dominos which is played throughout Barbados and taken very seriously. Fortunately to save us embarrassment Leroy and Rumpy ended up winning the match after our English contingent led for most of the time.

This was a great trip for all of us, mainly because only six of us were on the trip and it felt we were experiencing the real Barbados with the locals.
