hawker market

Tropical Sky Commercial Director Steve Garley continues to tempt us with tales of the fantastic local food you can find in Malaysia

When you are tired of your hotel there is nothing better than a local meal. If you’re staying at the Shangri-La Tanjong Aru in north east Borneo then you’ll find that a short 10-minute walk will take you to the local hawker market of Tanjong Perdana. The market consists of a collection of 50 individual stalls set around a covered seating area, and you can get food from any store and it in the communal area and eat in.

We chose the stall with the exotic drinks, and drank a mango and an avocado smoothie and ate two traditional Malaysian dishes, one a soup the other a generous portion of noodles. The total cost came out at only around £5 a head. And was it hygienic? It is the freshest food in the land and the locals are difficult to please, so I figure it is safe to eat. It’s all part of the authentic Malaysian experience and definitely not to be missed.
