Who’d have thought that there would be a royal regatta in Thailand? Well, there is just that, taking place at Hua Hin on coastline of the Gulf of Thailand – the country’s ‘home of sailing’. The race is held in honour of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej – a hero amongst the Thai people and a keen sailor. Competitors take sail from all over Thailand in the hope of winning the Royal Vega Rudder trophy – and catching a glimpse of the man himself.
Taking place from 3 – 8 August annually, this popular event is now in its 10th year. However, this isn’t the only chance for Thailand to celebrate their revered king. Rarely a month goes by without some sort of royal revelry or acknowledgement of him, marked by the wearing of yellow t-shirts. Everyone wears them – even tourists have been known to join in the royal worship, as the t-shirts are on sale very cheaply at almost every clothes stall and shop in Thailand. What’s more, they make an eye-catching souvenir to take home to the family!
