I had never been to Mauritius before but I was pretty sure that I knew what I was in for. I expected fantastic service, beautiful hotels, good weather and gorgeous food. High expectations for any holiday but it is a long way to go to expect anything less.
I stayed in Tamassa, a four-star hotel on the south west of the island in Bel Ombre. This hotel has not been open very long so the plants and foliage are still settling in, but this did not detract from the very positive overall first impression. The property has a very clear style throughout – incredibly modern with just a hint of retro. Very appealing.
One of the first things you see is a huge infinity pool (one of three) and luckily check-in is very swift so you don’t have to wait too long before you can jump in. The beach here isn’t the best on the island but to compensate that they have surrounded two of the pools with sand and an area in front of the beach is sandy also. A fantastic idea.
The two main pools share quite an unusual concept. Their outer rims are only about six inches deep; room enough to put your sunlounger in and cool off whilst still enjoying the sun. After that there is a small step and then you walk in as if it were the sea, ankle deep at first then getting deeper and deeper the further you go in and then back to shallow again on the other side. I loved the idea as you can lie down, your body completely submerged in water, and relax!
The style of the hotel runs through into the rooms. Clean lines, white walls and then bold colours strategically placed around. All complemented by very modern bathrooms, flatscreen TVs; they are plenty big enough and really quite chic. All have sea views.
My favourite thing about the hotel was the food. I have been lucky enough in my job to travel to some of the best five star hotels in many tropical destinations and the food here was every bit as good and in some cases even better! The service in the restaurants was brilliant too. You don’t really notice the staff around but they are always there ready a split second before you even know you want something.
Lastly the entertainment. While I was there they had an African-themed night where dancers and musicians performed in the main bar (a very slick place called B Bar). The only time the hotel seemed quite busy was in here. It was great entertainment, very impressive. Once the show was over people got straight up for a good old dance. After all, Tamassa translates as ‘to party!’
Would I go back? Already planning it.
