The cultural triangle incorporates Sri Lanka’s most famous and celebrated historical sites, largely located in the old capitals dating back more than 2500 years. Heading north east of Colombo, you can visit the ruined cities of Anaradhapura and Polonnuruwa, the Dambulla rock temple, ancient monasteries and the impressive lion rock of Mount Sigiriya which is a UNESCO world heritage site.

If you’re not a culture vulture then you might be interested to know that many of the sights are also famed for being the filming location of Duran Duran’s ‘Save a Prayer’ video – white linen suits and shoulder pads not necessary!

When visiting the sights, be sure to take plenty of water, have sensible footwear and dress properly with loose, comfortable clothing that covers your knees and shoulders. You must also remove your shoes when entering the temples. You can normally leave footwear by the entrance and someone will look after it for a nominal fee.

Finally, be sure to take your camera but don’t take any pictures of yourself with your back to the Buddha images or touching them. Temple etiquette and a respect for Buddhist customs will go a long way.
