Quite possibly one of the most exciting experiences of my life was seeing wild dogs taking a kill in the grass land’s of Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve. Once these dogs were abundant in Africa, but like so many other species they are in huge decline, and their mere existence is threatened by hunting and culling. Roughly the size of a Labrador they hunt in packs and scavenge for food, preying on the weak and ill. Although gruesome, seeing ‘survival of the fittest’ in action from no more than ten feet away was thrilling.
Safari in Tanzania is unlike the better known Kenya, in Selous you might be one of three jeeps roaming the visible planes and in the Ruaha National Park you probably will not see another jeep if you stay at Jongomero which is slap bang in the middle of the new park which is bigger than Wales!!
