If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring the myriad wonders of South America, this awe-inspiring tour is an in-depth adventure that will tick many of the highlights off your list. From hiking the Inca Trail to a week spent indulging in the amazing unspoiled landscapes of the Galapagos Islands, this is an unforgettable experience that offers up a range of wildlife sightings, vistas and experiences.

Your 8-day Galapagos cruise will be on board the Xavier III, with a crew of seven plus an expert naturalist guide who will be able to answer all your questions on the local wildlife and geology. There is a bar and dining room, and all your meals will be included whilst you are on board.

Details

Day 1

Lima

Arrive into Lima and transfer to your hotel for check-in. The rest of the day can be spent at leisure getting to know the delights of the city.

Day 2

Cusco

Transfer to the airport and take a flight to Cusco where you’ll meet your tour guide and transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore and relax. There is an optional city tour, if you want to see more of the attractions available here.

Day 3

Sacred Valley and Ollantaytambo

Travel with your local guide through the Sacred Valley of the Incas and visit the Pisac ruins and colourful markets (market days only) along the way. The trip today ends with a visit to the village of Ollantaytambo which is an impressive site of Inca ruins.

Days 4-7

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

On day four you will embark on what is a physically challenging but very rewarding excursion – hiking the Inca Trail. This 44km-long hike crosses three passes and reaches elevations of up to 4200m! You’ll begin at the Ollantaytambo ruins, passing the smaller ruin sites and luscious flora along the way to reach Dead Woman’s Pass or Warmiwañusca on day two. On day three, you will cross two more passes to reach the ruins of Phuyupatamarca – the Town Above the Clouds. On day four, you will reach the final landmark on this trip – Machu Picchu. There will be a guided tour, in addition to some free time to explore at leisure, before making your way to Cusco with the rest of your fellow travellers.

Day 8

Cusco

Today is a free day to explore Cusco at leisure – this area is considered to be the mecca of Peru and is home to beautiful colonial buildings, cobblestoned streets and charming museums. If you want to take part in some more adventurous activities, you can go rafting, horseback riding or mountain biking down to the Sacred Valley, perhaps visiting an Inca ruin along the way.

Days 9-10

Amazon Jungle (2B,2L,2D)

Fly from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado which is situated deep in the Amazon jungle. You’ll travel by motorised canoe to a lodge in the Tambopata Rainforest Area – there will be time to explore the jungle with local guides before flying to Lima for a final night out.

Day 11

Lima

Fly back to Lima for a last night in Peru before leaving for Ecuador in the morning.

Days 12

Lima and Quito

Transfer to the airport and take an unescorted flight to Quito (included) – you’ll then be transferred to your hotel for your overnight stay.

Days 13-19

Galapagos

Take an early flight to Baltra on day 13 and meet with a naturalist guide who will assist with your transfer to the Daphne – in the afternoon you will visit Bachas beach. On day 14, you’ll set sail for North Seymour which is home to marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies and sea lions, among other species. There will be a hike to the top of Bartolome Island for astonishing views of the scenery, as well as some time spent at the beach relaxing or snorkelling.

On day 15, there will be a morning excursion to Playa Espumilla which is an idyllic beach and one of the prettiest in the Galapagos Islands. The dense mangroves found here are a prime nesting spot for sea turtles. From here, you will journey to the Isabela and Fernandina Islands on day 16 for a chance to explore the unique landscapes and wildlife. Head to Elizabeth Bay for snorkelling and wildlife viewing opportunities on day 17 and 18, learning about the volcanic landscapes here, before visiting Santa Cruz on day 19 to explore the Cerro Dragon region.

Day 20

Quito

Today sees you sail to Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island to visit the Charles Darwin Foundation, where you can learn more about the giant tortoises found in the Galapagos Islands. In the late morning, you’ll take a one-hour transfer to the airport at Baltra for your flight to Quito.
