Beginning and ending in Yangon, you’ll discover a plethora of enticing destinations, including the peaceful waters of Lake Inle, a number of extravagant pagodas filled with sacred Buddhas, and charming Nyaung Shwe, which you will explore via a three-wheeled cyclo. This is the perfect adventure for those who wish to immerse themselves in Myanmar’s vibrant culture (GA - ABANG).

Day 1

Yangon

Upon arrival in Yangon, you will transfer to your hotel for an introductory meeting and a welcome dinner at the historical House of Memories.

Day 2

Mandalay

Today you will fly to Mandalay and spend some time exploring this fascinating ancient city, including climbing up Mandalay Hill to see the pagodas and monasteries nestled on top, and a visit to the beautiful Shwenandaw Kyaung monastery to see its delicate wood carvings of Buddhist myths.

In the afternoon, you will explore Kyauk Taw Gyi Pagoda to see the impressive Buddha created with marble from the Sagyin quarry – it took 10,000 men almost two weeks to transfer the Buddha to its current location! Next is the Kuthodaw Pagoda with its traditional Myanma style buildings and the world’s largest book, before ending with the Mahamuni Pagoda to see the 100 year old Arakan Buddha which is made of bronze and covered in golf leaf.

Day 3

Mandalay

Begin the day with a boat ride to the charming village of Mingun to discover its marvellous pagodas and local craftspeople, before visiting the spiritual centre of Myanmar at Sagaing – home to 3,000 monks and 100 meditation centres – and exploring the ancient royal capital Amarapura to see a silk-weaving workshop and the Mahagandayon monastery. End the day with a stunning view from U Bein Bridge, made of teak and 0ver 200 years old.

Day 4

Mandalay

Today is free for you to explore Mandalay at your own pace. Explore the local markets, marvel at colonial buildings or wander through the botanical garden.

Day 5

Full-day cruise

Day five will be spent on a full-day cruise along the peaceful Irrawaddy River to historic Bagan. The journey will take 7-11 hours depending on the time of year, and you can spend your time tucking into light meals and watching the world go by along the river banks.

Boat cancellations typically happen between April and September. If water levels are insufficient, you will journey by bus.

Day 6

Bagan

Your day in Bagan will begin with a guided tour of this beautiful area, beginning with a panoramic view of the entire city from an elevated temple, before strolling through the vibrant Nyaung Oo Market and delving into Bagan’s history at the Shwezigon Pagoda.

Next up in Wetkyi-In Gubyaukgyi, a cave temple adorned with jataka mural paintings, and the Htilomonlo Temple. Lastly, you’ll visit Kyan Sithar Umin (an exclusive tour for National Geographic Journeys), to discuss Buddhism and Bagan’s daily life with one of the resident monks – we’re certain you’ll leave with a new frame of mind.

Day 7

Bagan

Today you will journey to the outskirts of town to a village nestled in the middle of a toddy palm farm. Spend the morning watching locals climb the trees to harvest the juice of the palm fruit, and the marvel as they process it into alcohol or molasses.

You’ll also have the option to board a hot-air balloon flight early in the morning, offering you a phenomenal view of the sun rising over the Bagan plains.

Day 8

Inle Lake

Today you will travel to Inle Lake, stopping by Shwe Yan Pyay Monastery along the way. The rest of the day will be spent exploring Nyaung Shwe by cycle rickshaw, marvelling at the charming floating villages and gardens as you sail down the canal to the main part of the lake on a boat.

Day 9

Inle Lake

Most of today will be spent sailing along the lake, beginning with a visit to the morning market before winding down a river to Inthien, adorned with one thousand stupas on the hillside. After that, you’ll cruise to the lake’s main pagoda, Phaung Daw Oo, which is home to five sacred Buddha images covered in gold leaf.

Soon you’ll explore the local crafts and visit the weaving village of Inparkhone, stopping by a cheroot factory to see Burmese cigars made by hand. Soon it’ll be midday, and this is when you’ll be welcomed into a local chef’s home and treated to a home cooked meal of traditional Burmese dishes.

Day 10

Kalaw

Today you will travel by boat to Kalaw, a former British hill station. There’s the option of a trek in the afternoon.

Day 11

Yangon

In the morning, you will fly back to Yangon before visiting the Shwedagon Pagoda. Believed to be 2,500 years old, this pagoda is considered to be the symbol of Yangon.

The rest of the day is free for you to explore the old capital.

Day 12

Yangon

Today marks the end of your trip. Transfer to the airport for your onward flight, or if you wish to stay longer, chat to our travel experts and they will help you with ideas and inspiration.
