History:
The Maldives have been ruled by Kings and Sultans, even since ancient times. In these "ancient times" this country supplied a shell called the Cowries Shell which was actually used as currency throughout Asia and East Africa.
The Maldives was one of the islands that fell into a political mess in the 16th century but was pulled out of this spiral when it came under the British Trade Protectorate in the 19th Century. In 1965 the Maldives gained its own full independence and the Maldives Monarchs were granted a good measure of self governance.
