Mauritius is the most accessible island in the Indian Ocean, boasting a tropical paradise at very good value for money. The island boasts fantastic beaches, a spectacular scenic interior and the multicultural capital of Port Louis. Though located in the Indian Ocean not far from continental Africa, it’s actually more influenced by its British and French colonial ties and large Indian population. Here, you can enjoy a range of culinary delights while listening to exotic Créole music and locals chattering in various different languages.
Travel Guide to MauritiusLocation
Mauritius is just above the Tropic of Capricorn, 21 degrees to the south of the equator. It is approximately 1,900 kilometres east of continental Africa in the Indian Ocean and 900 kilometres east of the island of Madagascar.
Geography
Mauritius is volcanic in origin and almost completely circled by coral reefs with several offshore archipelagos and dotted islets. The mainland features coastal plains rising to a mountainous interior which circles a central plateau. About half the island is used for agriculture, and most farming land is devoted to sugar cane. There are also several tobacco plantations.
History
Mauritius was known to Arab seafarers as far back as the 10th century although they never settled there. It was ‘officially’ discovered by the Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama in 1498. The island was then wrangled over by the Dutch, French, and British and used for sugar plantations. It was also often used as a base for pirates. Independence from British colonial rule came in 1968 and Seewoosagur Ramgoolam was elected as the first Mauritian Prime Minister. Mauritius has a stable parliamentary democracy and free and fair elections, plus a positive human rights record. It has one of the highest per capita income rates in Africa and has attracted much foreign investment.

Mauritius is an ideal year-round destination with its sub-tropical climate and average sea temperature of 22° C. Although the island doesn’t really have high and low seasons, the Mauritian ‘winter’ occurs from July to September, where the temperature drops a few degrees and there is less rain and humidity, making for one of the more popular times to visit. However, there can be quite a variation in temperature and rainfall across the island. Its central plateau is generally much cooler than the coast and experiences around double the rainfall. The east of Mauritius is also cooled by trade winds which also bring more rain, which has led to much more settlement on the west coast.
What makes it so special?
Mauritius is a destination where you can get away from it all. It is safe and relaxing, with idyllic beaches and fantastic diving. It also blends different cultures with a colonial heritage and excellent varied cuisine with a higher range and quality than you typically find in the Caribbean. Prices are also modest and service is efficient and friendly from the wonderful Mauritian people.

Where to visit?
The Mauritian capital Port Louis is great for culture, shopping and varied dining. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens have an impressive array of plant life from all over the world. Curepipe is the centre of the Mauritian tea industry, and has the atmosphere of an English market town. It is well worth a visit along with its surrounding countryside. Visit Ile aux Cerfs off the island’s east coast is a popular trip and the mainland has a wealth of fine beaches to discover.
