Overview

Approaching on a guided raft after white water rafting along the Pacuare River, Pacuare Lodge makes an unforgettable impact before you even step foot in the surrounding rainforest. Named one of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World, you’ll find this eco-lodge hidden away amongst 25,000 acres of protected Costa Rican rainforest, just north of the soaring Talamanca Mountains.

We can’t help but be impressed with all the steps Pacuare Lodge has made to ensure they remain sustainable and help the local community and wildlife. The indigenous Cabécar Indians helped to build the thatched roofs that match their traditional architecture, whilst all the farm-to-table cuisine is cooked by talented local youths rather than an in-house chef. Farmers even sourced the lumber so that they wouldn’t need to use Pacuare’s protected trees. The acres of lush, untouched rainforest offer refuge for Costa Rica’s incredible animals, including jaguars, sloths and monkeys, and they’ve even protected 840 acres specifically to reintroduce howler monkeys to the forest.

The accommodation is clearly influenced by the lodge’s desire to stay as eco as possible. From the secluded Garden Suites all the way to the luxurious Jaguar Suite, all 20 of the bungalows are built with local materials, and have no electricity. We love how this incites travellers to truly connect to the Costa Rican rainforest, listening out for alluring animal calls and the calming sound of the winding river. The Canopy Villa is one of our favourite options – located high in the treetops, the villa features a private bridge that connects to a secluded terrace. The Jaguar Villa is just as fabulous with its private boardwalk jutting over the river.

Adventure is at the heart of Pacuare Lodge, and there’s plenty of opportunity to explore the rainforest. Enjoy more white-water rafting, or embark on a canopy tour and a full day of canyoning. There’s also jungle hikes, birdwatching tours and inflatable kayaks for those who prefer a more laidback experience.

Dining is a magical experience here, too. Sit by the riverbank and enjoy a candlelit dinner created with fruits, vegetables and cheeses from the lodge’s own farm. We love the unique canopy dining experience too – you just need to zipwire through the treetops to get to the platform.

Staying here is a truly unforgettable experience, and it’s perfect for those who seek sustainability, adventure and serenity.

Please note: the minimum age of stay at this property is 12 years and above.

This beautiful lodge is located along the banks of the Pacuare River, hidden away amongst 25,000 acres of unspoilt, protected rain forest. Due to its remote location, guests arrive either by raft or ground transportation by the team at Pacuare Lodge.

  • Garden Suites – There are seven of these blissful 62sqm bungalows, featuring a private terrace that overlooks the native bush gardens and lush rainforest. Inside, you’ll find one king-size or two full-size canopy beds, a bathroom with a 360-degree view of the jungle, and an outdoor shower.
  • River View Suites – Tranquil 91sqm suites, this time with a private terrace overlooking the Pacuare River and adorned with two chairs and a small table for your morning coffee. Each suite features a king-size canopy bed, plus another open terrace with a hammock. The ensuite bathroom boasts a near 180-degree view of the rainforest and river, and there’s an open-air heated shower nearby.
  • Linda Vista Suites – Secluded 230sqm suites perched on a ridge surrounded by lush emerald jungle and overlooking Pacuare River. The study of topography influenced the architecture of these suites so that you’re greeted with sensational views from every area, whether that be the bedroom, the large living room, the bathroom, and the private pool. There’s also a hammock on the terrace, a daybed in the living room, and indoor and outdoor showers.
  • Canopy Villa – A stunning villa located high in the rainforest’s canopy. Enjoy the serenity of living in the treetops, including the incredible private suspension bridge that leads you to a platform with 360-degree views of the jungle and Pacuare River. The villa itself has huge windows so you have a view at every angle, and also features a covered deck with a hammock and seating area, a sundeck adorned with a small swimming pool fed by spring water, two solar heated showers and a living room with a daybed.
  • Jaguar Villa – A peaceful and luxurious 350sqm villa located right next to the Pacuare River. Wander along the private boardwalk to the tree platform for phenomenal views of the river, or enjoy the incredible vistas from every room. The cool evening breeze eliminates the need for air-con, making it a truly sustainable villa. Enjoy the spring-fed pool, outdoor showers, the private deck with a hammock, a living room with two daybeds and two bathrooms – one of which has a bathtub overlooking the villa.

Pacuare Lodge prides itself on its sensational farm-to-table cuisine. Many of the vegetables and fruits you dine on whilst here are organically grown at the lodge’s farm, Las Nubes de Tuis, which is located in the mountains soaring above Pacuare River. Local farmers have been taught organic farming methods to aid the lodge with their production, and you’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy organic goats and Turrialba cheese. The kitchen staff is a team of young people from nearby communities – there’s no chef, instead Pacuare Lodge has established the talent of local people to help create their delicious dishes.

  • El Nido – Meaning ‘The Nest’, this unique dining experience takes place on an elevated platform built 20m high in a treetop. Zipwire down to the platform built around a Ceiba tree and tuck into a memorable breakfast or lunch alongside beautiful bird song and the sounds of the rainforest. This dining experience comes with an additional price.
