Tranquil and beautiful

Though the northernmost point is located in Switzerland, much of Lake Maggiore is shared by Italy’s Lombardy (east) and Piedmont (west). With such still waters and jaw-dropping mountain vistas, it’ll come as no surprise that Lake Maggiore is one of the most tranquil locations to visit, providing travellers with amazing views and a slow lifestyle.

A holiday to Lake Maggiore is bound to feel luxurious. The main towns, Stresa and Verbania, both boast magnificent Palazzos (large residences) adorned with some of the most impressive landscaped and botanical gardens. Visit Villa Taranto in Verbania to discover vibrant blooms and intricate sculptures, whilst Stresa’s Villa Pallavicino offers beautiful water features and even its own zoological park. Down by the water, you’ll discover picturesque harbours home to opulent yachts, whilst a bucket lift takes you to the top of Monte Sasso del Ferro for panoramic views of the lake and its surrounds.

Romantic and sophisticated, Lake Maggiore is one of our top picks for a luxury European getaway.

Why visit Lake Maggiore?

  • Much of Lake Maggiore’s local produce is renowned in Italy’s foodie scene, including decadent cheeses like Ossolano d’Alpe - best enjoyed with sweet local honey - and cured meats including violini di capra (goat’s leg). It’s a popular spot with budding sommeliers too, home to incredible locally produced reds line Nebbiolo and Ghemme Docg produced in the Novara Hills.
  • Often referred to as the jewels of Lake Maggiore’s crown, the Borromean Islands of Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori offer jaw-dropping views and magnificent architecture. Visit Isola Bella to discover the incredible 18th century palace and its ornate grotto, the Teatro Massimo amphitheatre and the beautifully landscaped gardens, whilst Isola Madre’s Palazzo Borromeo is outstandingly intricate and adorned with botanical gardens home to peacocks and Chinese pheasants. Commonly known as the Fisherman’s Island, Isola dei Pescatori is the only inhabited island and is home to a charming village with little boutiques and welcoming seafood restaurants.
  • Of course, there are a lot of opportunities to simply relax at Lake Maggiore. Should you get itchy feet though, there are plenty of great outdoor activities to keep you entertained. Enjoy some of Italy’s most scenic cycling routes – enjoying a stop at the stunning Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso – fabulous golf courses with gorgeous mountain backdrops, and fantastic sailing excursions.
