Eating, drinking and enjoying the nightlife in Singapore
There is amazing food just about everywhere you look in Singapore, whether you’re looking for cheap eats or gourmet menus. On the cheaper scale, you can visit the hawker centres – these are effectively huge markets of street food stalls. The food is excellent and authentic, the standards of hygiene are excellent and the prices are staggeringly low. At the other end of the scale, swanky seafood restaurants line the prime shopping areas and gigantic pan-Asian buffets are ubiquitous. A happy medium can also be very easily found, especially if you’re a fan of Chinese, Indian or Malaysian cuisine (although you’ll find restaurants serving just about every cuisine).
The famous Singapore Sling cocktail actually was invented in Singapore, and you can try the original at the Raffles Hotel, although be aware that every other tourist has had exactly the same idea, and the hotel’s Long Bar gets very busy, it’s also worth noting that your drink will not be hand-mixed by a skilled cocktail maker – the hotel had the bright idea of pre-mixing the drink to deal with the huge demand.
For such a straight-laced city, Singapore has a vibrant nightlife that’s just the right level of seedy. The super-club Zouk is famous worldwide, while there are many other locations to try if you fancy something different. Karaoke is very popular here too, and a lot of fun.
