The Oman government aims to quadruple the numbers of visitors to the Sultanate over the next 11 years, making tourism the biggest contributor to Oman’s GDP…
The private sector has already invested more than $10 billion in several major tourism projects in Oman, including an upgrade and expansion of Muscat International Airport. When finished in 2011, the expansion will increase the airport’s capacity to 12 million passengers a year.
Ongoing plans will see a new terminal building, 32 air bridges and an additional runway, together with an upgrade of the existing runway to handle the Airbus A380. Other tourism projects also underway and due for completion in the next five years include ten integrated resort-style developments in various parts of the country and a 6,000-seat convention centre close to the airport.

Work is also nearing completion on the venue for the 2010 Asian Beach Games, which will take place at Wudum Al Sahil near Muscat in December 2010. Following the event the development itself will be used as a major resort complex and new regional airports and facilities are under construction in Nizwa, Duqm and Salalah.
