Overview

The Cliff Bay enjoys a long standing reputation for high quality. Everyone who visits comments on the staff’s dedication and attention to detail, and it’s this high level of service together with excellent facilities and a great location that provides its winning formula.

Guest rooms are large and well-equipped, and there’s a great choice of restaurants and bars plus 24-hour room service so you need never venture further afield. But of course we do recommend that you explore and eat out in Funchal’s Old Town at least once during your stay. In the hotel gardens there are saltwater and freshwater pools and if you’d like to see octopus, moray and ray first hand, there’s access to the ocean during the day via the hotel’s own pontoon. Free introductory lessons can be booked at reception if you’re not confident about your snorkelling or diving abilities.

If relaxation is what you’re after, there are beautiful tranquil gardens with ancient palms where you can wander or read or simply luxuriate in the sun. A real treat is a weekly Afternoon Tea with aromatic tisanes and a plethora of sandwich, scone and pastry delights; although we do definitely recommend upgrading to champagne or delicious semi dry 10 year old Madeira wine to start!

The Cliff Bay is located on a promontory with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean. Surrounded by gardens, the hotel has a tranquil aura as well as fantastic views.

It is near to Funchal’s seafront promenade so it’s easy to walk to the main shopping area with its fish market and numerous flower sellers, plus the delightful Old Town with its trendy bars and traditional restaurants. You must make sure to visit the Blandy Wine Lodge to discover 200 years of Madeira Wine tradition, or experience further afield by taking a trip to hike the levadas or mountain bike though the subtropical forests and old-fashioned traditional villages.

  • The hotel is approximately 30 minutes transfer from Funchal airport.

  • Funchal Bay View - Twin or double 30-36sqm rooms between 1st and 5th floor with stunning views of Funchal Bay and the harbour from the balcony. Sleeps a maximum of three adults
  • Superior - Top floor twin or double 30-36sqm rooms between 6th and 8th floor looking south or southwest to catch the afternoon sun with additional facilities*. Sleeps a maximum of three adults
  • Side Sea View - Twin or double 30-36sam rooms between 1st and 4th floor facing south or southwest with a 1m high wall on the balcony. Sleeps a maximum of three adults
  • Junior Suite - 40sqm with queen sized beds and a view over the Bay of Funchal, mainly located on the 3rd floor with additional facilities*. Sleeps a maximum of three adults

  • Il Gallo dl’Oro – Two Michelin star restaurant run by Chef Benoit Sinthon offers exquisite Mediterranean and Iberian inspired aromatic flavours. Dress code: jacket and tie recommended. No shorts or jeans. Dinner 7pm-9.30pm (closed Sundays). Advance booking required. A definite must for anniversaries and birthdays.
  • Avista – located atop a natural promontory in one of the centuries-old houses next to the hotel, breakfast, lunch and dinner is served under the guidance of Chef Benoit Sinthon, Executive Chef of The Cliff Bay. Breakfast 7.30am-10.30am. Lunch 12pm-2.30pm. Snacks 12pm-10pm. Dinner 7pm-10pm
  • The Rose Garden – breakfast and themed international dinners are served a la carte and buffet style including Italian Romance, Latin Night, Friday Fish, and Portuguese traditional fare with live music. There are menus for children but shorts and flip flops are not welcomed. Breakfast 7am-10.30am. Dinner 7pm-10pm
  • The Blue Lagoon – Enjoy bar lunches and snacks, barbecues and salads beside the ocean and the saltwater pool. Bar 10.30am-6pm. Lunch 11am-5pm. Plus there’s occasional evening meals during the summer months.
  • The Cliff Bar & Bistro – for snacks and afternoon tea, plus dance the night away to live music. Winter 10.30am-12.30am. Summer 10.30am-1am.
  • Navigator’s Lounge- this is a great space for enjoying views of the Atlantic or your holiday read. Open from 10.30am-1pm.
  • Cactus Bar – great for family lunches and early dinners by the indoor pool. And perfect if the children like fruit juices, salads and lighter style meals. 10.30am-6pm.
  • Room service – and, of course, there’s a fantastic menu for you to enjoy at any time in the privacy of your own room or suite. 24 hours.

  • We love the salt water pool at sea level. With an average temperature of 21 degrees, it’s always open between 7am-7pm although from July to September, it stays open until 8pm.
  • Beside the spa, there’s an indoor/outdoor pool (average temperature 27 degrees) which is open between 7am-8pm.
  • There’s also a dedicated children’s pool at sea level. With an average temperature of 21 degrees, the pool is open between 7am-7pm and until 8pm (July to September).
  • There’s a pontoon for sea access (7am-7pm) with free introductory snorkelling and diving lessons bookable at reception

Expert ESPA treatments are personalised to provide you with a feeling of harmony and well-being. The spa area has eight treatment rooms with Jacuzzi, gym, Turkish steam bath, sauna and relaxation room.
