Explore the beauty of Antigua

Located at the heart of the Leeward Islands in the northern Caribbean, the improbably shaped island of Antigua is ringed with incredible beaches. While it is dominated by British and West African culture, the influence of Portuguese settlers has added a distinctive Mediterranean flavour to the lifestyle here. If you can pull yourself away from the sublime white sand and sparkling sea, you’ll find that this is an island overflowing with history and intrigue. Shirley Heights, a restored military lookout offers genuinely spectacular views, and the cultural heritage site, Nelson’s Dockyard, is the home of the Antigua Sailing Week and other yachting events.

Antigua is a lovely modern vision of the Caribbean – stunning beaches, warm smiles and excellent year-round weather.

Located north of St Lucia in the Eastern Caribbean, it is famous throughout the region for the handsome English Harbour and the fun-loving Sundays of Shirley Heights. We love Antigua for its charm and versatility with fine sandy beaches backing onto stretches of open greenery and wonky verdant hills.

It is a true haven for sun-seekers and thrill-seekers alike, with a fantastic range of accommodation options. And thanks to the abundance of well-preserved coral, Antigua is a great choice if you’re a fan of scuba diving or snorkelling.

The culture is blessed with traditional Caribbean friendliness, drawing on influences from a colonial past that saw French, Spanish and predominantly British rule. There’s a lingering passion for everything English, mostly shown through a love of cricket and a reserved charm.

Nevertheless, Antigua (officially joined with sandy sister island, Barbuda) has been an independent nation for more than 30 years and has more than established its own customs and traditions.

Why visit Antigua?

  • St John’s is a cute Caribbean capital and one of the nicest cities in the region – there is a parade of pretty buildings and some excellent boutique shops and markets
  • The Sunday evening party at Shirley Heights is famous across the Caribbean for its calypso rhythms and infectious spirit – it’s been going for more than 25 years
  • There are secluded romantic beaches with beautiful white sand. Believe the hype; Jolly Beach truly has one of the best stretches of sand in the Caribbean
  • A dramatic and pretty landscape with forests, beaches and impressive National Parks
  • English Harbour is a large natural harbour that is a heaven-on-Earth for sailing enthusiasts – you’ll meet plenty of like-minded people here if you’ve got an interest in sailing
