Climb aboard the Maharajas Express’ train and enjoy a fascinating 8 day journey through the heartlands of the country. Stop off at designated points and enjoy guided tours to some of India’s most impressive places – see the very best of India in one luxury train tour.  

Riding the Maharajas’ Express is a once-in-a-lifetime experience itself, harking back to the era of the maharajas with lavish interiors, refined service, comfortable accommodation and superb dining. Accommodating a maximum of 88 guests across a range of cabin types all featuring air conditioning, Wi-Fi internet, LCD televisions, private bathrooms, butler and room service, the train offers new levels of luxury to your journey across India.

This all-inclusive journey starts in the vibrant Mumbai; you’ll then head off to see marvels including the Ajanta Caves, the Gajner Palace and the Amber Fort. You’ll also get the chance to see some of the country’s amazing wildlife with a game safari in Ranthambore National Park. The tour ends on a high with a visit to the Taj Mahal before rolling in to Delhi. (IH)

Details

Day 1

Mumbai

Arriving in Mumbai you’ll transfer to the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel where you’ll go over the details of your trip and complete registration.

From here you’ll head to the Mumbai Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station where you’ll catch the Maharajas Express where you’ll be introduced to the luxury of the facilities on board. After dinner you’ll retire to your room, and the train will continue overnight to the Ajanta-Ellora Caves.

Day 2

Ajanta

After breakfast on board the train you’ll arrive at Ajanta, where you’ll leave the train to explore the famous Ajanta Caves – carved into the cliff face using chisels and hammers, the caves are home to Buddhist, Jain and Hindu temples. You’ll then head back to the train for lunch, as it departs in the direction of Udaipur. Settle into your accommodation and enjoy some time relaxing, then later have dinner and stay on the train as it travels overnight.

Day 3

Udaipur

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before arriving into Udaipur. Here you’ll leave the train and continue onwards to the City Palace and Crystal Gallery. At lunch you’ll dine at Satkar Hall of Fateh Prakash Palace. Afterwards you can either choose to return to the train for leisure time or choose an optional shopping tour of the city. Back on board the train you’ll have dinner and then the train departs for Jodhpur.

Day 4

Jodhpur

Today you’ll have breakfast on board and then will arrive into Jodhpur with some time to relax. Have lunch before heading out on a guided visit to the Mehrangarh Fort.

You’ll then have the choice of either taking a visit to the Clock Tower Market or opting to enjoy spa services at a top quality hotel. Enjoy a lovely dinner at Hanwant Mahal before returning to the train, which will depart overnight for Bikaner.

Day 5

Bikaner

Have breakfast on the train before arriving in Bikaner. With plenty of time to relax you’ll then enjoy lunch on the train before departing to explore this breathtaking city. You’ll see Junagarh Fort and Gajner Palace on your journey – a chance to take in wonders not often seen on trips to India. Later you’ll visit the Sam Sand Dunes for a barbeque dinner and sundowner cocktails. You’ll then return to the train which will depart for Jaipur.

Day 6

Jaipur

Enjoy breakfast before you arrive in Jaipur. This is the capital of the state of Rajasthan, meaning its history is draped in the memory of the maharajas – very fitting for your journey. Leave the train and watch an Elephant Exhibition Polo Match before heading to the City Palace for a champagne lunch. You’ll follow that up with an elephant ride to the Amber Fort before returning to the train. Have dinner and then the train will depart on the track to Sawai Madhopur.

Day 7

Ranthambore/Fatehpur Sikri

Early in the morning you’ll reach Ranthambore National Park where you’ll depart for a game safari – this is a real treat where you’ll get the chance to see some of India’s most incredible animals including the majestic tiger, leopard, sloth, wild boat and nilgai.

After the safari you’ll have breakfast at Vivanta by Taj before returning to the train. It will the depart bound for Fatehpur Sikri, and you’ll have lunch on board. On arrival you’ll get off and explore this jaw-dropping former Mughal capital and learn about its history. Head back to the train for ‘Indian Evening’ and dinner on board as you head off, bound for Agra.

Day 8

Agra/Delhi

Today you’ll arrive early in Agra and take a sightseeing tour of the Taj Mahal. One of India’s most famous landmarks, the Taj Mahal is also one of the world’s most awe-inspiring sights and should not be missed. After the tour enjoy a champagne breakfast at the rooftop restaurant of Taj Khema.

You’ll then return to the train and it will leave for Delhi. After lunch on board you will arrive and disembark the train. This is where your train journey ends. You’ll then head to the airport for your flight home.
