Set in the heart of the Indian Ocean, and with over a thousand miles of golden sand edging its sapphire waters, Sri Lanka encapsulates everything you could want in a tropical paradise. Rich in wildlife, it is a haven for birds, plus exotics such as elephants and leopards. In the higher parts of the island, the temperature cools, and the shimmering paddy fields of lower down are replaced by the blossoming tea plantations of Kandy or the Hill Club. Evidence of the British Raj can be seen in the architecture, the old cars and the language, while the ancient ruins in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa show a more distant past. Although traces of the tsunami remain along the coast, most areas are fully recovered: be assured of a very big welcome here.
