Overview

An amazing 29-day trip which encompasses the highlights of Indochina, from buzzing Bangkok to the beautiful serenity of Ha Long Bay. During your stay you will marvel at the wonders of Angkor Wat, sail along the Mekong and devour delicious noodles in Chiang Mai. This is small group tour with the emphasis on experiencing the culture and main sights with the perfect mix of local experiences that you might well miss when travelling independently. Your accommodation will be comfortable and characteristic of the local area with some unusual locations along the way. All  transport and a variety of activities are all included in this tour, it's the perfect balance of must-see highlights and fun-filled free time.(GCL)

Day 1

Bangkok

Arrive at any time into Bangkok.

Day 2

Bangkok

Take a guided longboat tour today at Wat Po temple, with the option to visit the Grand Palace of the National Museum. Then you’ll board an overnight train to Chiang Mai for the next stage of your trip (flight and extra night in Bangkok during monsoon season, depending on conditions).

Day 3

Chiang Mai

Today sees you take part in a guided tour of Doi Suthep temple, and where possible you should try to watch the chanting monks. There’s an optional bike tour of Chiang Mai, cooking lessons, a city walking tour, visits to nearby temples and also a night visit to the market.

Day 4

Chiang Khong

Head to Chiang Khong via Wat Rong Khun, a dazzling White Temple, and enjoy your first view of the mighty Mekong.

Day 5

Mekong River

Cross the river border today into Laos, then travel all day by boat along the Mekong River. This relaxing journey is the perfect chance for you to relax and watch as the world goes by, followed by a traditional village visit. You’ll also be able to take part in a town and local market walk in Pakbeng.

Days 6-8

Luang Prabang

On day 6, you will take part in a guided tour of the Pak Ou caves before arriving in Luang Prabang. The following day you will have the opportunity to see the Kuang Si waterfalls and will make a stop at the Ethnology Museum to learn about the local customs and dress. Day 8 will be a free day for you to explore, there’s many activities on offer including a bike trip, an elephant trek, cooking class, temple visits, massage or shopping at the night market.

Days 9-10

Homestay/Vang Vieng

Spend the night living like a local in the village with a traditional Laotian meal, then on day 10 you will drive through gorgeous mountain scenery to the picturesque town of Vang Vieng where you can explore the countryside by bike or kayak, visit the cool caves or grab your bathing suit for a swim.

Day 11

Vientiane

Today you will have free time which you may find fills up quickly with the variety of activities to do here! Take a city walking tour of Vientiane and visit some of the oldest and most fascinating temples, learn about the local people at the National Museum, or go to visit the national symbol and important sacred monument at That Luang. If you have time and like to shop, take a wander around the morning markets (incidentally open all day!).

Days 12-13

Hanoi

Take a morning flight to Hanoi on day 12 to enjoy a walk around the maze of traditional streets devoted to different products and industries. Whilst here you’ll enjoy a water puppets show, a visit to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and a stilt house. During your free time there’s many options, you can visit the Temple of Literature, Joa Lo Prison, the museums and the Old Quarter. Or simply sit and enjoy a Vietnamese iced coffee with some beautiful scenary by the lake.

Days 14-15

Ha Long Bay/Hanoi

Enjoy an overnight cruise to Ha Long Bay, with an included seafood lunch and dinner. Visit the caves and dip into the waters for a swim, with optional kayaking around the bay. An overnight train takes you to Hue on day 15.

Day 16

Hue

Today you’ll take part in a guided tour of the Imperial Citadel (UNESCO world heritage site), the exciting Royal Tombs at Hue and one of the tallest, most elegant pagodas in Vietnam. With free time in the afternoon, take an optional guided countryside motorbike tour.

Days 17-19

Hoi An

You’ll have plenty of time to explore the historic city of Hoi An. It is a beautiful place with many areas you can explore, including the Hindu temples at My Son, the wonderful tailor shops, and options to rent a bike to explore or learn how to make a traditional lamp. You’ll go to a cookery class on day 18 to learn how to make various types of noodles.

Days 20-21

Ho Chi Minh City

Take a flight to Ho Chi Minh City – the once capital of South Vietnam. Wander round the small alleys and busy streets, stopping off at the delicious food stalls. Day 21 you’ll take a guided tour of the Cu Chi tunnels and the optional visits to the War Remnants Museum, Ben Thahn markets, the Colonial Quarter and various temples.

Day 22

Mekong Delta Day Trip

Today is spent at the Mekong Delta with a guided trip and boat cruise, and a visit to the traditional sweet-making factories. After spending the day here, travel back to Ho Chi Minh City in time for an optional dinner.

Days 23-24

Phnom Penh

Travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh on day 23, crossing the border into Cambodia. Enjoy a cyclo ride through the streets to soak up the vibe. You’ll experience a guided tour of Tuol Sleng Prison and Choeung Ek (Killing Fields). There’s the option to visit the National Museum and the Royal Palace or go shopping at the Central and Russian Markets.

Days 25-27

Siem Reap/Angkor Wat

Travel the 6-8 hour ride (private vehicle) to Siem Reap through the beautiful Cambodian countryside. Take a guided tour of Angkor Wat temple complex, with an optional visit to Tonle Sap floating village and Angkor National Museum. Enjoy a traditional meal of Khmer food either at the New Hope project or in a local home. Then by evening you can go to see the wonderful Cambodian Circus show.

Day 28

Bangkok

Today is a travel day where you’ll journey through the scenic landscape of Cambodia, followed by a border crossing into Thailand. Spend your last evening in Bangkok and indulge in flavourful Thai food.
