Overview

Spend time living the nomadic life in Mongolia, letting its people and the awe-inspiring scenery captivate you. Leaving the modern world behind, you’ll travel by horseback and oxcart to a simpler way of life without the mod-cons of the capital. Here, you’ll spend time living with nomadic families in a traditional ger, learning how to make authentic cuisine, buttons and garments, and how to steer oxcarts in the local area for an experience unlike any other. Details

Day 1

Ulaanbaatar

Arrive into Ulaanbaatar and explore the museums and temples in the city.

Day 2

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

Leave Ulaanbaatar today and take a two-hour bus ride to the Terelj National Park. Upon arrival you’ll be met by a local guide who will greet you with either an oxcart or horses, which you’ll ride back to your nomadic family. Dismount upon arrival and enter the ger for your first nomadic lunch and traditional Mongolian tea. While you’re here, you’ll learn about the techniques for saddling a horse and preparing an oxcart, as well as learning to play traditional Mongolian games in the evening. Once the sun has set, be sure to look out at the star-strewn sky which is amazing from the park.

Day 3

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

Take part in a brief shopping trip for personal snacks and supplies for the week, before riding 24km on horseback to an open green plain to meet a local seamstress who will teach you how to make authentic patterns for garments. You’ll enjoy lunch, dinner and traditional tea with the seamstress and her family. If you wish to, as with all days on the itinerary, you can opt out of activities with the family during the day in favour of hiking in the mountains or enjoying the countryside.

Day 4

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

Visit another nomadic family today to learn how to tie traditional knots to tether livestock together, as well as learning how to make traditional buttons for sewing onto Mongolian garments.

Day 5

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

Today sees you learn the art of archery by practicing with authentic Mongolian bows and arrows, before enjoying a friendly archery competition with the locals. From here, travel 6km by oxcart to your next family.

Day 6

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

Wake up early today and help your hosts milk the cows before learning how to make dairy products which you’ll sample for breakfast. In the afternoon, travel to your next family.

Day 7

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park/Ulaanbaatar

Today you will learn how to steer an oxcart and practice this skill in the local area. There will be a final traditional lunch with your hosts before heading back to the capital for some last minute sightseeing.

Ulaanbaatar

Depart from Ulaanbaartar today. (Transfer is not included)
