Located in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a wonderful place for those looking for more than just a beach wedding. We chose Sri Lanka, mainly because it had been so affected by the Tsunami two years ago and we wanted to take our tourism into a country that really needed it (as opposed to the Caribbean which doesn’t). It is also a short plane ride – just over an hour – to the Maldives where we had booked for our honeymoon.

We got married at the newly opened ‘The Fortress’ hotel in Koggala, just outside of Galle. Our wedding package included local Kandy dancers who, with their dancing, music and colourful costumes, were the soul of the wedding ceremony and escorted both myself and the groom towards our flower covered wedding arch which was set in the hotel gardens overlooking the stunning Indian Ocean. The ceremony in which we exchanged rings, vows and signed the registrar was watched by 20 family and friends who had made such a great effort to join us on our special day. The highlight has to be the elephant, who not only stood patiently whilst the ceremony took place, but who then allowed us onto her back and took us for a walk along the beach. The setting was just perfect and in the bright sunshine with a light breeze, it certainly beat a cold, wet December day in the UK!

Our wedding was arranged by our wedding co-ordinator, Ally, who looked after us so well and had the knowledge, not just of the country but also of the hotel and local customs. She was also able to offer advice on how many days you need to be there before you can get married. Ally had actually visited the hotel a few weeks beforehand and had taken photographs of the areas that we could get married – most important as we actually discovered that the garden would give us a better location than the beach and therefore I needed to ensure I wore my wedding shoes. It’s the little items like this and the attention to detail that a bride-to-be really needs to know!

Our honeymoon in the Maldives was just magnificent; it really is heaven on earth. We stayed for five nights at Huvafen Fushi, a luxury five-star resort, before transferring to Dhoni Mighili where we enjoyed a week on one of the smallest islands, with just six beach cottages and each cottage came complete with its own Dhoni boat so you could choose to stay either on land or on the sea. We sailed around the various atolls each day and had our own butler and boat crew on hand to attend to every need. As I said; heaven on earth!
