The 10 most romantic retreats in the Indian Ocean for couples

Written by Amadea, Indian Ocean Product Manager

There's a reason couples have been escaping to the Indian Ocean for decades. Step off the plane – or in some cases, step off the seaplane – and something shifts. The air is warmer, the pace slows, and the world back home feels very, very far away. Whether it's the powder-soft sands of the Maldives, the lush granite drama of the Seychelles, the colonial elegance of Mauritius, or the wild, spice-scented coast of Sri Lanka – this part of the world does romance better than almost anywhere on earth.

We've spent over two decades sending couples to these islands, and we know which resorts truly deliver the magic and which ones simply look pretty in the photos. This is our definitive list of the 10 most swoon-worthy retreats we offer in the Indian Ocean — the places where honeymooners don't want to leave, anniversaries become unforgettable, and proposals are planned weeks in advance. Each one has been hand-picked by our team of specialists, not because of a brochure, but because we know them well.

Six Senses Zil Pasyon, Seychelles

The stay: There are very few places in the world that genuinely take your breath away the moment you arrive. Six Senses Zil Pasyon on the private island of Félicité is one of them. Accessible only by helicopter from Praslin – a 15-minute flight that skims low over jade-coloured water and drops you into a world of granite boulders, swaying palms, and luminous sea – this all-villa hideaway is as remote as it is extraordinary. The villas themselves are tucked dramatically into the rocky hillside, each one feeling completely private, with plunge pools that seem to hang over the Indian Ocean and outdoor dining decks where fruit bats glide past at dusk. Deep-soaking bathtubs, private wine cellars, and genuinely attentive (but never intrusive) butler service complete the picture.

The romance: The Six Senses Spa here deserves its own sentence. Its elevated saltwater soaking pool, looking out over nothing but open ocean, is genuinely one of the most peaceful spots in the entire Indian Ocean. Yoga and meditation pavilions, holistic wellness programmes, and a philosophy rooted in reconnecting body and mind mean you'll leave feeling properly restored. Beyond the spa, there's snorkelling from the shore (the coral around Félicité is in remarkable condition), boat trips to nearby La Digue, outdoor cinema nights under the stars, cooking classes using fresh Seychellois ingredients, and a rum bar that does a very good job of rounding off the evenings. The beautiful cove of La Penice is just around the headland – ask your villa host to pack you a picnic and it's all yours.

Anantara Maia Seychelles Villas, Seychelles

The stay: Anse Louis on Mahé's south-west coast is one of the island's quieter, less-visited beaches, and that's precisely why Anantara Maia works so perfectly. There's a deep sense of seclusion here – 30 acres of landscaped tropical gardens, a striking black lava stone pool, and a dining policy that simply says "whatever, wherever, whenever." If you want a candlelit dinner on the beach at 10pm, they'll make it happen. If you'd rather eat breakfast in your outdoor gazebo watching a kingfisher work the shoreline, that's equally fine. Every villa comes with its own private infinity pool, a sunken outdoor bath big enough for two, and a 24-hour butler who manages everything with quiet, seamless efficiency.

The romance: The Balinese-inspired spa is quite unlike anything else in the Seychelles – open-air pavilions, qi gong at sunrise, yoga sessions that look out over the canopy, and treatment menus designed to work together rather than exist in isolation. Complimentary non-motorised water sports mean you can take out a kayak or stand-up paddleboard whenever the mood takes you. The resident sommelier runs cellar tastings that pair perfectly with the evening meal. And the personalised garden tours, led by one of the resort's botanists, are a genuinely lovely way to spend a quiet afternoon. This is a resort that rewards couples who want to slow down and simply be together.

Raffles Seychelles, Praslin

The stay: Praslin is Seychelles' second-largest island, and the north-eastern corner of it – above the narrow, coconut-palm-lined strip of Anse Takamaka – is where Raffles has made its home. This is an all-villa resort of impressive scale: the largest pool in the entire Seychelles archipelago (at 45 metres, it's genuinely closer to a lagoon than a pool), six restaurants ranging from relaxed beach dining to fine Creole and Asian cuisine, complimentary non-motorised water sports, and easy access to the Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve. The UNESCO-listed reserve – home to the iconic Coco de Mer palm, rare black parrots, and one of the most extraordinary pockets of primordial forest on the planet – is just a short drive away and something every visitor to Praslin should experience.

The romance: The Raffles Spa holds the title of largest spa in the Seychelles, and rightly so – its glass-fronted treatment pavilions sit so close to the Indian Ocean that you can hear the waves during your massage. Every villa features an open-air balcony, private plunge pool, outdoor rain shower, a daybed pavilion for lazy afternoon reading, and a freestanding bathtub with a view of the water that makes it genuinely difficult to get out. In-villa dining, personalised excursion planning, and the kind of unhurried, warm service the Raffles brand is known for all make this a deeply romantic base from which to explore beautiful Praslin.

Constance Prince Maurice, Mauritius

The stay: Named for Dutch navigator Maurice Van Nassau – the man who first put these islands on the map in the late 16th century – Constance Prince Maurice sits on a sheltered stretch of Mauritius's north-eastern coast and carries its heritage with quiet confidence. This is a six-star property in every meaningful sense: secluded white-sand beaches, tropical gardens so lush they feel theatrical, and a striking infinity pool with private cabanas overlooking a natural fish reserve where you can watch parrotfish drift past in the shallows. Condé Nast Traveller has repeatedly recognised it as one of the most romantic hotels in Mauritius, and it's easy to see why. Nothing here feels rushed, corporate, or showy — just beautifully considered luxury.

The romance: For couples who like to stay active, there's a full menu of water sports (kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkelling, kitesurfing, water skiing), floodlit tennis courts, and complimentary transfers to two nearby championship golf courses – the Legend and Links courses, both worth a morning's play. For those who prefer to simply exhale, the spa is exceptional, the pool bar reliably excellent, and the wine cellar – stocked with over 25,000 labels – is a genuine highlight. Four restaurants serve everything from fresh-caught Mauritian seafood to French-inspired fine dining. The villas and suites, some with private plunge pools and garden terraces, are among the most beautifully appointed we've seen anywhere in the Indian Ocean.

Baros Maldives

The stay: Baros has been welcoming guests to its private island since 1973, making it one of the oldest resorts in the Maldives. But don't let that longevity fool you into thinking it's rested on its laurels – this is a resort that has refined and evolved its offer over five decades into something genuinely exceptional. Just a 25-minute speedboat ride from Malé International Airport (no seaplane required, which makes logistics refreshingly simple), Baros sits on a house reef of remarkable health, ringed by beach villas that practically touch the sand and overwater villas that stretch out over a lagoon of extraordinary clarity. The island itself is small, intimate, and entirely adults-focused in atmosphere, even though it's not officially adults-only.

The romance: Baros Lighthouse Restaurant remains one of the most legendary dining venues in the Maldives – perched on a converted lighthouse above the reef, it serves exquisite cuisine as the sun drops and the stars emerge. The spa is consistently rated among the finest in the archipelago, offering couples' treatments in open-sided pavilions above the lagoon. Snorkelling directly off the beach reveals a kaleidoscope of marine life; we've encountered turtles, reef sharks, and manta rays all within minutes of the shore. The combination of genuine barefoot luxury, world-class food, and a house reef most resorts would envy makes Baros one of those rare properties that consistently exceeds expectation.

Hurawalhi Island Resort, Maldives

The stay: For couples who want the full, unfiltered fantasy of the Maldives – powdery white sand, impossibly turquoise water, barefoot luxury and nothing else – Hurawalhi delivers it in a deeply focused way. This is an adults-only resort, a 40-minute seaplane ride north of Malé in the Lhaviyani Atoll, and from the moment you touch down on the jetty there's a sense that the world has been deliberately simplified. Beach villas and overwater villas are designed in a classic Maldivian style that feels timeless rather than faddy, with sweeping sunrise or sunset views depending on which side of the island you choose. The lagoon here is spectacularly calm and clear, ideal for snorkelling and stand-up paddleboarding.

The romance: The 5.8 Undersea Restaurant is Hurawalhi's showstopper – a glass-enclosed dining room submerged 5.8 metres beneath the ocean's surface, where you can watch nurse sharks, Napoleon wrasse, and hawksbill turtles drift silently past the windows while you work through a tasting menu of serious quality. It's one of the most memorable dining experiences in the entire Indian Ocean, and we'd strongly recommend booking it for your first or last night. The Champagne Pavilion, positioned at the end of the Ocean Villa jetty, is where sunsets are best appreciated: take a glass, let the light change over the water, and resist the urge to check your phone.

Fushifaru Maldives

The stay: Fushifaru is one of those Maldivian resorts that the well-travelled tend to know about and the rest of the world hasn't quite caught up with yet. Located in Lhaviyani Atoll, it's a friendly, family-run resort – intimate, quiet, and naturally gorgeous – that delivers an experience far more personal than many of its flashier neighbours. The vibe is chic and unhurried; décor is rooted in classic Maldivian island style with beach-inspired hues, natural textures, and carefully considered detail. Beach villas and overwater villas both come with private verandas, outdoor dining areas, and garden spaces with outdoor baths. The house reef is exceptional for snorkelling, with manta ray encounters a regular occurrence for those willing to get up early.

The romance: Food here deserves a mention. Korakali serves authentic Maldivian and tropical flavours in a relaxed, open-sided setting, while Raakani focuses on the kind of fresh seafood platters that remind you why eating simply, well, and close to the ocean is one of life's genuine pleasures. We're particularly fond of Thundi – a brightly painted van parked near the beach that serves cold-pressed juices and fresh fruit skewers at breakfast, a small touch that somehow captures the whole spirit of the place. Dolphin watching cruises, snorkelling with mantas, sunset fishing trips, and a spa with excellent couples' treatments round out a resort that feels genuinely romantic without trying too hard.

Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Mauritius

The stay: Le Touessrok has been one of Mauritius's most celebrated addresses for over four decades, and since Shangri-La took the reins, it's only become more accomplished. Positioned on the untouched eastern coast of the island – a stretch that catches the trade winds and keeps the light particularly beautiful in the late afternoon – the resort commands one of the finest lagoons in Mauritius, fringed by Hibiscus and Frangipani beaches. The accommodation is spread across two peninsulas and two nearby islands, creating an estate-like sense of space and privacy. Suites and villas range from ocean-view rooms with generous terraces to three-bedroom beach villas complete with private infinity pools, butler service, and a personal chef.

The romance: The exclusive offshore island of Ilôt Mangénie is worth knowing about. Accessible by boat (daily, 9am–5pm), it's a private island escape within a private island escape – barefoot tables in the sand, artisan pizzas, rum cocktails, and nothing on the horizon but open sea. Coco's restaurant, perched where Le Touessrok's story began, serves classic Mauritian recipes and just-caught seafood with views over the lagoon that make it impossible to rush a meal. Five restaurants, two beach bars, a ESPA spa, golf on Île aux Cerfs (the course designed around sea inlets is one of the most dramatic in the Indian Ocean), and a full programme of water sports all contribute to a resort that manages to feel simultaneously grand and genuinely relaxing. This is Mauritius at its most refined.

#9

Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel, Mauritius

The stay: There's a reason Paradise Cove calls itself a boutique hotel rather than a resort – it's genuinely intimate in a way that larger properties simply cannot replicate. Set on Mauritius's northern coast at Anse la Raie, with views across to the five northern islands, this adults-only retreat takes its design cues from traditional Mauritian architecture infused with the vivid, sunbaked palette of historic Pondicherry. The result is something charming, idiosyncratic, and deeply pretty – a place that photographs beautifully but feels even better to be inside. The beach is calm, sheltered, and consistently uncrowded, and the seawater plunge pool is one of those features that sounds gimmicky until you're floating in it at sunset, watching the sky turn pink over the northern islands.

The romance: With only a handful of rooms and suites, the service here is refreshingly personal – staff remember your name, your preferences, and the small details that make a holiday feel genuinely special rather than efficiently managed. Four restaurants offer a variety of dining from Creole and international cuisine to light beach lunches and elegant evening menus, all with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. Spa treatments, catamaran trips, snorkelling excursions, tennis courts, and a gym all feature, but the real draw is the atmosphere – quiet, romantic, and completely removed from the world. This is the Mauritius that honeymooners dream of.

Anantara Tangalle Peace Haven, Sri Lanka

The stay: The name tells you everything you need to know. Built on a former coconut plantation overlooking a sun-bleached, wild-feeling beach near the town of Tangalle on Sri Lanka's unspoilt south coast, this Anantara property is all about understated, thoughtful luxury in a setting that feels genuinely off the beaten track. Opened in 2016, it carries the Anantara hallmarks – exceptional food, a serious spa, and service that never feels performed – while channelling something distinctly Sri Lankan: batik fabrics, rattan headboards, colonial-inspired teak furniture, and views out over an Indian Ocean that looks entirely different here from the gentler waters further north. The 25-metre outdoor pool, yoga pavilion, and Spice Spoons cooking school (where you'll learn to make a proper pol sambol and a fish curry from scratch) all add to the sense that this is a destination rather than just a hotel.

The romance: The Dining by Design programme is the jewel in Anantara Tangalle's romantic crown – a private dinner for two with a customised menu, impeccable personal service, and a setting of your choosing, whether that's a candlelit table on the beach, a pavilion overlooking the gardens, or an intimate corner of the resort chosen by your butler. For couples who want a little more privacy, the villas with private plunge pools and furnished outdoor terraces are worth every penny of the upgrade. Tangalle's location also makes it an excellent base for exploring the south coast – Mirissa, Weligama, and the ancient rock fortress of Yala National Park are all within reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. When is the best time to visit the Indian Ocean for a romantic holiday?

It depends on which destination you're planning to visit, and this is genuinely one of the most important questions to get right. The Maldives is beautiful year-round, but the driest and calmest months fall between November and April – this is peak season, so book well in advance. The Seychelles has two distinct seasons shaped by the monsoon winds: the north-west monsoon (November to April) brings calmer seas to most of the islands, while the south-east trade winds (May to October) create wilder conditions but also spectacular underwater visibility. Mauritius is wonderful from May to December, when the south-east trade winds keep the east coast fresh and clear. Sri Lanka's south coast – where Anantara Tangalle sits – is best visited between November and April. Our specialists will always talk you through the seasonal nuances for your specific itinerary, because the Indian Ocean isn't a one-size answer.

2. Are Indian Ocean honeymoon resorts worth the cost?

In our experience, yes – particularly if you choose wisely. The Indian Ocean consistently ranks as one of the world's top honeymoon destinations for good reason: the combination of natural beauty, genuine seclusion, and genuinely exceptional hospitality is hard to replicate elsewhere. That said, not every high price tag delivers a high-quality experience, and this is where booking with a specialist matters. We know which resorts over-deliver at their price point and which ones simply charge for the name. Properties like Fushifaru Maldives and Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel in Mauritius offer deeply romantic experiences at a more accessible price than the ultra-luxury tier, while Six Senses Zil Pasyon and Baros Maldives justify every penny for couples who want the very best. We'll always help you find the right balance.

3. Which Indian Ocean destination is best for a honeymoon – Maldives, Seychelles, or Mauritius?

All three are exceptional, but they offer genuinely different experiences. The Maldives is the most resort-focused – life tends to revolve around your island, your lagoon, and the underwater world, and that's a very specific kind of magic. The Seychelles feels wilder and more textured, with granite boulders, lush jungle, and a variety of islands to explore – it suits couples who want beauty and a little adventure alongside their beach time. Mauritius is the most culturally rounded of the three: there's real history, proper food culture, world-class golf, and a diversity of landscape that rewards exploration. Many of our clients choose to combine two destinations in a twin-centre holiday, which we're very happy to arrange.

4. Do these resorts cater specifically for honeymooners?

Almost all of them, yes – and the genuinely good ones do it without being heavy-handed about it. Expect welcome touches such as rose-petal turndowns, honeymooner perks, private dining experiences, and complimentary upgrades at many properties when you book through us and notify our team that it's your honeymoon. The Dining by Design programme at Anantara Tangalle, the Champagne Pavilion at Hurawalhi, and the private beach access at Constance Prince Maurice are all examples of the kind of details that make the difference between a lovely holiday and a genuinely unforgettable one. Our specialists know which resorts go the extra mile – just ask.

5. How far in advance should I book an Indian Ocean honeymoon?

As early as you possibly can, particularly if you're travelling during the school holiday periods (July, August, and December to January) or if your heart is set on a specific resort. Some of the most sought-after overwater villas at properties like Six Senses Zil Pasyon and Baros Maldives can book out six to 12 months in advance. We'd recommend getting in touch at least nine months before your travel date for peak-season travel. That said, we do occasionally have late availability and can sometimes work with flexible timing – so if your wedding date is closer than you'd like, do call us anyway. Our team will always do everything we can to make it happen.
